A Johnstown pediatrician pleaded guilty Thursday to sexually abusing more than 30 children, some of those members of his own family, over a period of several decades.

Dr. Johnnie Barto, 71, of Johnstown, was charged in July with sexually abusing 29 children, including one who was only two weeks old at the time, according to a criminal complaint.

Authorities said the victims were both boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 12.

In January, March, and April, Barto was charged for similar crimes against another patient and two family members, according to court documents.

Barto entered guilty pleas today to multiple counts of aggravated indecent assault, which are second-degree felonies, in addition to multiple counts of indecent assault and endangering the welfare of children.

“Dr. Johnnie Barto used his position of authority – as the pediatrician who families relied on – to feed his own sick desires and take advantage of parents and children seeking basic health care,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro in a written statement.

He is currently in the Cambria County Jail and will be sentenced in 90 days, after he undergoes a sexual offenders assessment.

His medical license has been suspended.
