A North Braddock woman is in police custody and is facing criminal charges after her toddler was found wandering in North Braddock on Thursday morning.

Athena Coffey, 39, is charged with child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said they received several calls around 8:40 a.m. from concerned neighbors who said the toddler was walking alone near Shaver Way,

While police quickly located the house on Grandview Avenue where the toddler lived, his parents were not at home and they were unable to find them in the area.

Once inside the home, police saw “urine in a cup, feces in the toilet that has been there for months, and drug paraphernalia all through the house,” said North Braddock Police Sgt. Isiah Daniele. The home also had no running water.

With the aid of the media and concerned neighbors, police located Coffey, who told them she had been at a nearby store.

Coffey was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, where she is awaiting her preliminary arraignment. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 6, according to online court records.
